“This afternoon, while going through the warehouse, I came across a box containing some of our finest single-tree teas.
Inside were four large bags of single-tree tea. One of them was from an 1,800-year-old purple-bud ancient tea tree from Heshangsi(和尚寺).
Stored since 2012 spring, I immediately brewed some for a tasting.
After 14 years of transformation, the liquor has developed a beautiful ruby-red hue. The infusion is exceptionally rich and full-bodied, with an abundance of natural pectin that gives it remarkable texture and depth.
Its flavor is strikingly reminiscent of Phoenix Dancong and top-grade Wuyi rock tea.
In fact, when ancient-tree raw Pu-erh is aged under extremely dry conditions, its flavor can evolve dramatically. It goes far beyond orchid fragrance—at times revealing lush floral and fruity aromas together with a distinct rocky minerality, and even the honeyed peach fragrance associated with insect-bitten teas.”
